Day 2

You will have to bare with me. I have no idea how much to write and/what to share. So, feel free (which I am sure you are doing anyway) to read what you want and ignore the rest...
On the first day of this trek, I biked only a total of 11 miles on the road between my house in Queens, NY and my sister's house in Dearborn, MI. The rest of my time and mileage was spent on a train and a bus. But, because of the luggage I carry, and the nature of train travel, there was plenty of opportunity to answer some questions about my plans. (Sorry, Mike, I know you told me to be careful, and not to talk to strangers. But it would be a rather lonely 6 weeks if I avoided them all together!) Besides, I met some pretty cool strangers on the train. Stanley (a former corporate lawyer turned archeologist and prison reformer), Jim #1 (a fellow PK & children's theatre guy on Long Island), and Jim #2 (in construction, awaiting the birth of his first grandchild). I had plenty to ask them about for my interest in history, theatre and home improvement. Their questions for me usually started with, "Now, let me get this straight..." Not only strangers, but those of you who have been "in on" the plans from the beginning are also looking for clarification. "Are you going to have your bike with you when you visit?" "Wait, you were going to bike here...?"
So, yes, here I am in MI with my bike, a fully loaded bike at that. I've got my tent & sleeping bag, extra socks and shorts, pajamas, snacks, sunscreen, etc, usw. The sun is shining. And as soon as my nieces get out of bed, I might just head out to the trails with them and validate the reason for this trip: to spend time with loved ones and enjoy the days as they come. If you are looking for more clarification, keep coming back here. The updates will happen more frequently. Feel free to ask me any questions along the way, too. Now that the trip is underway, I'll have a better idea of how to answer them!
Enjoy your day as you find it! Peace, Kathy
